Optimization of fleet structure and investment evaluation – the cargo owner's fleet perspective

چکیده
Purpose Energy groups are cargo owners with large amounts of energy sources (such as coal) to transport. To achieve a satisfactory tradeoff between the reliability requirements sea transportation process and need control investment cost, they usually set up self-owned fleet supplemented by chartered fleet. This paper aims investigate best structure evaluate scheme under volatile circumstances in shipping market. Design/methodology/approach The authors construct mathematical model determine ratio total minimize operating costs. volatility both freight rates oil prices is taken into consideration. CPLEX solver used empirically analyze real data from an group China, ship plan evaluated considering technical economic feasibility. Findings If increased optimal 90.40%, cost reduced 33.98%. Thus, should increase its capacity Panamax vessel approximately 82,000 DWT. Purchasing 5-year-old secondhand building new have good return indicators. Originality/value For engaging transporting bulk domestically suggested can provide reference universal application scale, given boundary conditions (including market) paper.

Rail car fleet design: optimization of structure and size
We develop a model to determine the optimal structure and size of a rail car fleet at a chemical company under uncertainty in demand and travel times as well as substitution between rail car types. First, we formulate an MILP model that accounts for the substitution relations between the types and minimizes the total direct rail car cost under given rail car availability constraints and a prede...
متن کاملThe Liner Shipping Fleet Repositioning Problem with Cargo Flows
We solve an important problem for the liner shipping industry called the Liner Shipping Fleet Repositioning Problem (LSFRP). The LSFRP poses a large financial burden on liner shipping firms. During repositioning, vessels are moved between services in a liner shipping network. Shippers wish to reposition vessels as cheaply as possible without disrupting the cargo flows of the network. The LSFRP ...

متن کاملBus Fleet Type and Age Replacement Optimization: A case study utilizing King County Metro fleet data
Bus fleet data have consistently shown that vehicle operating and maintenance costs increase as vehicles age. A fleet manager has to deal with the tradeoff between the lower operating and maintenance costs of newer fleets and their higher initial capital costs as well as the tradeoff between conventional and fuel efficient bus technologies. This study formulates and implements a fleet replaceme...
متن کاملTemporal Optimization Planning for Fleet Repositioning
Fleet repositioning problems pose a high financial burden on shipping firms, but have received little attention in the literature, despite their high importance to the shipping industry. Fleet repositioning problems are characterized by chains of interacting activities, but state-of-the-art planning and scheduling techniques do not offer cost models that are rich enough to represent essential o...
